Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter who wrote and performed reggae music. He is considered one of the most influential musicians in the world, and his music helped spread reggae worldwide.
Marley died from cancer in 1981 at age 36, but his legacy is today through his music and the Rastafari movement.
Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, to a white mother and black father in Nine Mile, Jamaica. He grew up in rural poverty and was exposed to music at a young age by his father, who played the guitar and sang.
Marley began playing music as a teenager and was introduced to Rastafarianism, which significantly influenced his life and music. He formed the band The Wailers in 1963 with Bunny Livingston (aka Bunny Wailer) and Peter Tosh.
The group released several successful albums between 1973 and 1978, including “Catch A Fire”, “Burnin’”, “Natty Dread”, and “Rastaman Vibration”.
Marley became a worldwide superstar in the late 1970s thanks to his hit song “No Woman No Cry”, which was released in 1975. He also became known for his activism and humanitarian work, which included a successful campaign to end apartheid in Jamaica.
In 1977, he was shot in the arm by gunmen attempting to assassinate him. He recovered from his injuries and continued to perform, releasing his first solo album, “Catch A Fire”, in 1973 and his second “Burnin’” in 1974. In 1976, Marley released “Natty Dread”, followed by “Rastaman Vibration” in 1977.
The album was a massive hit, selling over 20 million copies worldwide. In 1978, he married Rita Anderson and had two children with her before divorcing in 1992.
